Earth Hour/Earth Day Pledges

• Gabriel Cutajar (St Theresa School, Gozo)

  My list of small changes that make a big difference are:
  1) pick up plastic when I go to the beach
  2) pick up plastic when I’m out at sea with my kayak
  3) sort our the wast at home and at school in the proper bins

  We created a hashtag which will be used by students, parents and staff who participate in the Earth Hour initiative. The children have been given a set of activities they can do at home , including colouring a poster on the tablet. They will share a photo of this once the hour passes, online with the hashtag #LightsOUTMostaB. We also passed on the message that this initiative should guide us to helping out with climate change every day.

  Due to the current situation, Laura Vicuna School, Għasri, Gozo sent email to 285 parents/guardians and staff informing them about the collaborative Earth Hour initiative.

  We, Francesca, Mariella & Miriam, (supervisors of the EkoSkola Committee) are all doing this activity as well on Sunday from 8:30pm till 9:30pm where we will avoid the usage of electricity.

  We will switch the lights and sit aroumd the candles to talk about our dreams and hopes.

  For Earth Hour at school we switched off all the lights, interactive whiteboards and computers for one hour.  On the day we took meter readings and compared to consumption to that of other ‘normal’ days and found that we managed to use 13% less electricity!

• St Ignatius College, Żebbuġ Primary – Claire Bezzina

  Students and staff at school will take notice of all the lights switched on in rooms where no lessons are being held. Lights will be obviously switched off.

  Every student will take the pledge to consume less electricity and water. Morning assemblies will make all the staff and students aware of the necessity to take more care of our planet.

  We will switch off the boards and discuss good practices on how to save electricity. We can also go outdoors e.g. the school yard and have other activities – or simply enjoy a good book/story telling session in the school gardens.
